Review by Carme of Shojiro

I don't get why you would want to have 3 courses plus desserts for dinner. They were all wonderful, including foie with caramelized cherry, sea urchin risotto, red mullets with black fideuá on the side... And gorgeous chocolate fondant with strawberry sherbet before the petit-fours.

Everything was delicious separately, but a bit too much as a whole. That ruins the experience for me, especially in the evening. I have the same problem with Santi Santamaria, both at Can Fabes (Sant Celoni) and at Evo (Hesperia Tower calling mother ship). Remind me to tell you about them some other time.

No spring rolls and chicken broccoli here: this is a very fine Chinese restaurant which massive flocks of Chinese and Japanese tourists seem to know very well. In fact, that was what caught our attention so we decided to give it a try.

The menu can be confusing, with all these Chinese, Japanese and Spanish fusion going on, so we decided to be bold and order whatever sounded good. Jellyfish was surprisingly tasty (with soysauce, that is), and clams "al ajillo" were just spectacular, just like the crispy sea bass. But the best of all, hands down, was the duck. Generous portions, too.

The best:
The thoughtful waiters who suggested a side order of rice to mix with that garlic sauce!
The worst:
A slightly tacky atmosphere.

Review by mtjbuckley of The Fastnet

The food served in this establishment is very hearty and reasonably priced. It is a great place for people who want a change from spanish cuisine(i say this as someone who is a great admirer of spanish food).

Review by tim of Mamacafé

I used to be a regular Mamacafian, back in the day when it was a shiny new hip place to be. I seem to remember that it identified itself as organic back then but it could be my imagination. However I stopped going a few years ago after I had a very ordinary dinner there with friends. Yesterday I was back there, for lunch, having the menu del día, which consisted of starter, main, dessert and coffee for 10 € or thereabouts. No complaint there then.

The best:
Prices. Always excellent desserts.
The worst:
Lost that special something that it had.

Review by Carme of Ken

Excellent Japanese cuisine with an interesting compromise to Catalan taste --if you like the idea, try the crab-stuffed calamari or fried egg w/ foie. They are also great with the classics and make one of the best tuna tartares in town.

On the not-so-good side, the place is really small (5 tables, literally) so it's best to go in parties of 2-3 and sit at the bar. Reservation is a must. Don't be deterred by the owner's attitude. She means well, but just gets lost in translation sometimes XDD

The best:
The teppanyaki steak and noodles.
The worst:
It's always packed. Don't even try without a reservation, and avoid the 2pm and 9:30pm shifts.

Review by tim of Arc Café

I've not been a fan of Arc Café over the years, whilst others have sworn by it I always seemed to pick a bad time to go, the cook had split up with his girlfriend or the waiter had a hangover or some such thing - it just didn't work for me.

However, going back there last time was a pleasant surprise. The Thai food that they now offer is really good, the humus really tasty and all in all it was a nice night.

The best:
Thai Food
The worst:
It's hidden away.

If you must go to Maremagnum (handy for clothes shopping on a Sunday), then treat yourself to lunch at Elx, it's the only establishment worth going for.

Elx delivers traditional Valencian cuisine to a very high standard (I have family from Valencia and even they approve) in a modern but classy atmosphere. It is all about fish, paellas and white wine. Everything worth trying.

The best:
The quality of the fish and the care and attention given in its preparation.
The worst:
It's in Maremagnum!

Review by tim of Thai Lounge

Depending on the day I've had really good experiences and not so great experiences at Thai Lounge. However, I will say that their core offering of Thai food is just as good as the Royal Thai Gardens and a bit cheaper.

During the week they have a lunch menu that isn't really up to much, and I wouldn't recommend it.

Review by tim of Fratelli La Bufala

Fratellia La Bufala is a small Italian pizza chain just landed in Barcelona. The restarant is big, filled with real art (not just posters) and their culinary offer is fantastic offer.

The Pizza is on par with Bella Napoli and the rest of the menu is well prepared and delicious. I had Spaghetti Putanesca to start with followed with breaded Dover Sole, which was well cooked and not over cooked. The lunch menu was only 10 € and represents one of the better deals in Barcelona center.

The best:
Price, Pizza
